South Sudan, REACH: Area of Origin

Project completed

Constant population movements in Southern Unity due to insecurity have hampered humanitarian access to information about IDPs in many locations. REACH’s response seeks to bridge the information gap and provide a better understanding of the IDP situation in Southern Unity for humanitarians on the ground, to ensure effective and informed humanitarian response to the affected population.

Background

Violent conflict broke out in December 2013, displacing over 2 million people. Southern and Central Unity are some of the most affected areas, having experienced heavy fighting. As a result insecurity and hunger have caused constant population movements. These, coupled with the poor roads have made humanitarian access and response to critical needs of affected populations challenging.

Objectives

To promote a better evidence-based IDP crisis response and contingency planning in Southern and Central Unity State through coordinated information management.

Target groups
  • Communities in the 7 counties of Central and Southern Unity State, South Sudan
  • All Humanitarian agencies working in the project’s location.
Medium-term outcomes
  • To provide regular, comparable and actionable information on IDP populations integrated in deep field locations, where traditional CCCM activities do not occur.
  • To monitor unfolding displacement trends, amongst conflict and disaster affected populations of Southern and Central Unity
  • To understand conditions in IDP areas of origin, through both on the ground research and remote data collection, using our key informant network
Results

Expected results:

  • Regular situation updates on displacement trends in targeted locations, IDP population movements and settlements provided to the humanitarian community on a regular basis.
  • Key factors influencing durable solutions and eventual return/integration processes are identified and outlined in project products, shared with humanitarian community on regular basis
  • Levels of population’s access to services are measured and  information with the humanitarian community shared
