Between 2005 and 2007, 10,500 Sri Lankan families received support from a Swiss consortium coordinated by the SDC to rebuild their homes which had been destroyed by the tsunami on 26 December 2004. The SDC has met up with 11 of these families ten years after the disaster.
They are living in the districts of Trincomale or Matara, in Sri Lanka, and were fortunate to receive financial assistance from Switzerland to rebuild their homes after the tsunami. Ten years after the disaster, eleven families who benefited from the "Cash for reconstruction" programme share their feelings. Although their memories of the disaster remain vivid and the grieving for lost loved ones is still very real, they have had to cope with new ordeals since then. The SDC has collected their stories for an exhibition held in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, at the end of 2014.
