- The improvement of the light quality (luminous yield, uniformity and concentration of lighting). The intervention will contribute to put the street lighting system of Arad in conformity with Romanian and EU norms.
- Increased outdoor activities by the population of Arad through the lighting of bicycle roads, pedestrian boardwalks and playgrounds.
- A reduced electricity consumption of 314 MWh/year against a baseline extrapolating electricity consumption of conventional lights.
- Reduced energy and maintenance costs against a baseline extrapolating electricity consumption of conventional lights, related to the energy savings, longer lifetime and higher reliability of the LED lamps. The expected annual cost savings are about CHF 48'500 on energy and maintenance.
- The avoidance of 200 tons of CO2 emissions/year, 3'000 tons over the expected 15 year lifetime of the investments.

| Background |
Under the Swiss-Romanian Cooperation Programme the European Energy Award is being introduced in four Romanian pilot cities. The European Energy Award is a quality management and certification system for municipalities committed to sustainable municipal energy, climate and transport policies. It is based on the label “Energy City”, which has originally been developed in Switzerland. Arad, a city of 148'000 inhabitants located by the Mures River in the Northwest of Romania, is one of four selected pilot cities. Based on its Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) it has identified the rehabilitation of the district heating network as a priority infrastructure project. |
| Objectives |
The goal of the project is to save energy and costs by improving the quality and energy efficiency of the public lighting system in Arad. |
| Target groups |
The direct beneficiary of the project is the Municipality of Arad, which will save costs and thereby be able to release funds for additional improvements and energy saving measures. |
