Evaluation and Results Management Support to Multilateral Organisations

The UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) are priority partners for Switzerland’s commitment to multilateral development assistance. At the same time, results-oriented operations and evaluations are key instruments for their work. The proposed project plans to strengthen these instruments to improve the effectiveness of the above mentioned organisations.

MEDAC: Strengthening Mediterranean Diplomacy

The Mediterranean region is marked by serious democratic deficits, environmental and demographic challenges, multiple conflicts and difficult political transformation processes. It is of eminent importance for Europe’s security. Switzerland’s longstanding support of the Mediterranean Academy for Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) in Malta aims to strengthen Mediterranean diplomacy in areas such as human rights and good governance and to build trust among young aspiring diplomats from various countries of the region.

WHO - Emergency drugs supplies

Today hospitals in Gaza are ill-prepared to meet the critical needs arising from a wide-scale emergency, because the health sector in the Strip is already suffering from a chronic shortage of medical supplies and fuel for years. In order to prevent the collapse of the Palestinian health system, to mitigate the effects of the supply shortages and to respond to the emergency situation prevailing in Gaza due to the heavy shelling causing thousands of civilians causalities, SDC is responding to a WHO emergency humanitarian appeal that will serve to purchase medical supplies to cover the needs of at least 37.000 patients.

UNOCHA - Emergency Response Fund for the oPt 2014

SDC financial contribution to the pooled Emergency Response Fund (ERF) managed by UNOCHA in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) will enable humanitarian actors to quickly respond to the humanitarian crisis erupting in the oPt mainly in Gaza Strip following the armed conflict of July 2014. This intervention is in line with SDC Cooperation Strategy 2010-2014 for the oPt to support Palestinians living in the oPt in asserting their rights and gain­ing improved access to quality basic services including relief assistance.

Cameroon, MSF-CH, Emergency CAR refugees

Since December last year, more than 100,000 Central African refugees – over half are children – have entered Cameroon after walking and hiding in the bush for weeks, and at times for months. This project intends to provide humanitarian, medical and nutritional assistance for refugees who fled the conflict in Central African Republic (CAR) and settled in Cameroon. The objective is to reduce the morbidity and mortality and prevent any further deterioration of their nutritional situation.

Rehabilitation of schools in northern Lebanon

Following the rehabilitation of 13 schools in northern Lebanon in the first phase of the project, the SDC is expanding its engagement to 15 other schools in the same region. The rehabilitation works are being carried out in cooperation with the Lebanese authorities to help them cope with the large influx of refugee children from Syria.

Africa-Europe Development Platform – AEDP

Diaspora organizations in Europe have increasingly gained in importance. In order to achieve their goal of enhanced cooperation in countries of origin, and to play their role as development actors, required framework conditions need to be guaranteed. Effective network dynamics and activities are best managed on a permanent platform, setting structured grounds for a competent delivery of relevant and appropriate context specific services to diaspora organizations, countries of destination and countries of origin. This platform-building is at the core of the Africa-Europe Development Platform (AEDP) project.

West Africa MSF: Emergency medical reponse to Ebola outbreak

The current Ebola outbreak across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone has surpassed all other outbreaks in terms of cases, deaths and geographic spread. Over the past 30 years, MSF has been responding to several epidemics of hemorrhagic fever in Africa and through this long experience gained a capital expertise. The Guinean Ministry of Health (MoH) requested support from MSF on case management and outbreak control since the beginning of the epidemic. The current Ebola outbreak has the potential to spread outside the affected countries and beyond the region if urgent and relevant containing measures are not put in place.

International Development Association (IDA)17 – Core Contribution 2014-2017

IDA is the main instrument for pursuing the World Bank Group goals in the world’s poorest countries, i.e. ending extreme poverty and building shared prosperity in a sustainable manner. To this effect, IDA strives to sustain economic growth and make it more inclusive across and within IDA countries. In the current context, IDA also addresses particular development challenges, including fragility, gender equality, jobs and climate change. Switzerland was able to influence positively the IDA17 negotiations. In recognition of the excellent track record of IDA, the current contribution underlines the importance attached to IDA and the World Bank Group by Switzerland, and the commitment to increase the Swiss ODA to 0.5% of GNI.

In Muminabad District in Tajikistan, Switzerland is reducing the risk of natural disasters and promoting the integrated management of the Obishur and Chukurak watersheds. Sustainable agriculture and livestock production carried out by local people with the support of the local authorities creates the necessary conditions for integrated watershed management.
