According to the World Health Organization (WHO), non-communicable diseases are the biggest cause of death worldwide. On an international average 60% of deaths are linked to NCDs. This rate is often much higher in low-to-middle-income countries. This is the case in Kyrgyzstan where cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes account for 80% of deaths

Sustainably managed pastures and healthy animals: Mongolia's 'green gold'

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the number of livestock in Mongolia has nearly tripled – to the detriment of the country's grasslands. The SDC is supporting an array of measures to encourage the sustainable use of pastureland, and to improve animal health and the marketing of livestock products. These efforts are helping to safeguard the livelihoods of nomadic herder families.

Safeguarding children’s rights in East Jerusalem

By supporting a comprehensive child protection programme in occupied East Jerusalem, Switzerland aims to ensure that vulnerable children at risk of being in conflict with the law or directly affected by the conflict, together with their families, have access to appropriate preventive and protection programmes. The intervention, implemented by UNICEF and its partners, is in line with Switzerland's engagement for the respect of human rights and international humanitarian law in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Flash floods and mudslides are examples of hazards that threatens inhabitants of Muminabad district in Tajikistan. Switzerland is supporting a project to reduce the risk of natural disasters in four watersheds of the district. The project of Caritas Switzerland relies on a sustainable agriculture and livestock production with a strong involvement of local communities and authorities.

Lebanon: education and care in a neighbourhood shared by Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians

The inhabitants of Hay el Gharbé in southern Beirut live in a very precarious situation. Since 2012, a number of Syrian refugees have joined their neighbourhood. The SDC supports the Lebanese NGO Tahaddi, which has made a real difference in people’s lives here – such as with its education centre, helping a large number of children to (re)discover schooling and escape their daily hardships.

El Niño – helping the people of Lesotho withstand the challenges of climate change

El Niño signifies unprecedented climate catastrophe for the countries of southern Africa. The drought has destroyed millions of hectares of farmland and the population of an entire region faces the threat of food insecurity. Lesotho was the first country to raise the alarm. The SDC has released a million Swiss francs to support the operations of the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) which also benefits from the provision of Swiss experts.

Kakuma: Developing vocational skills in a refugee camp

The SDC’s Skills for Life pilot project teaches vocational skills to refugees and residents of Kakuma, to enable them to work and earn a living. More than 580 young people were trained in phase one of this project, which was launched in 2013. Phase two began in summer 2016.

Supporting livestock traceability in the South Caucasus

Confronting and combating gender-based violence in Mongolia

Gender-based violence has been on the rise in Mongolia since the turn of the millennium. Yet because of a serious lack of data, the extent of the phenomenon is difficult to assess and a culture of impunity continues to hold sway. The SDC plans to conduct a national survey to address this problem. At the same time, it intends to strengthen institutions, put in place appropriate services and raise public awareness.
