| Background |
Urban areas are the dynamic engines of the global economy and contribute about 70% to global GDP and carbon emissions. Thus, cities have a huge potential for poverty alleviation and mitigating climate change. It is imperative to support cities in shifting towards a more holistic approach to urban development as well as to assist them in financing and managing urban infrastructure in an integrated manner. |
| Objectives |
The overall objective of the SECO - World Bank Urbanization Partnership is to bring cities in the developing world to a point where they balance environmental, economic and social trade-offs to urban development. The project targets three levels of intervention: - Building the Evidence through Urbanization Reviews - Promoting Integrated Projects through coordinated planning, connecting and financing - Enabling evidence-based decision making (implementation of the Urbanization Reviews) |
| Medium-term outcomes |
In the countries of operation, urbanization and city development are elevated to a national development objective, cutting across concerned line ministries. Furthermore, government actions are much more coordinated across sectors and among neighbourhoods within cities. |
| Results |
Expected results: Finalization of at least four additional Urbanization Reviews and eight in-depth Policy Guidance Notes per year. Initiation of at least three integrated infrastructure projects per year- initiation and implementation of at least three projects per year focusing on planning and connecting. Establishment of a Mayors? Dashboard with standardized and open-source data systems of comparable city indicators. The full set of indicators will be collected for not less than six cities per year. Results from previous phases: This is the first phase of the partnership |
