SDC supports Pakistan’s disaster resilience efforts

Maria Daud works as a project manager in the fields of food security and disaster risk reduction for the Pakistan programme at Malteser International, an NGO that is supported by the SDC. She shared her experiences at the SDC’s 2015 Annual Conference of Swiss Humanitarian Aid in Bern.

The Plant Doctor Game, a video game specially developed for the Swiss pavilion at Expo Milano 2015, enables visitors to step into the shoes of a smallholder farmer who needs to protect his or her crops. The theme of the 2015 Universal Exhibition is food security worldwide. The SDC will showcase its commitment and capacity for innovation in this domain at the Expo.

Fifteen years after the adoption of the Dakar Framework for Action, the 2015 edition of the Global Monitoring Report on Education for All presents a mixed picture. Some progress has been made, but the most vulnerable are still not fully integrated into educational programmes in many parts of the world. The SDC makes universal access to education a priority, and at the same time ensures the quality of the education programmes provided.


Roma in Serbia project finalist for World Habitat Award

A project aimed at improving the living conditions of Roma in Serbia is among the 10 finalists for the World Habitat Award 2014-2015. Each year this award goes to two innovative projects aimed at the poorest and most vulnerable populations. The finalists were selected from among 200 applications. 




Improved data on groundwater in Kakuma

Some 180,000 people today live in the Kakuma refugee camp in north-western Kenya, a camp built for 40,000. The water supply consists of local groundwater, of a quality and quantity not entirely understood. A better understanding is now being achieved thanks to a project financed by the SDC, and with the help of new technologies.


Financing for sustainable development

Financing of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) is the focus of a Europe and Central Asia conference being held on 23 March in Geneva. A Swiss diplomat is to lead the regional consultations. Specialists from governments, civil society, business, international organisations and academia will meet for discussions in Geneva to enable them to adopt a common position in the summer at Addis Ababa, where the states are to make commitments regarding financing for development.


Switzerland to participate in foundation process of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank

The Federal Council has decided that Switzerland will participate in the foundation process of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), which is to promote sustainable economic development in Asia. Switzerland is one of the first countries in western Europe to take this step. It can thus be involved in the preparation of this important new financial institution's articles of agreement. Moreover, it will enable Switzerland to be well positioned in the new institution from the outset. Finally, this move will help to strengthen relations with China and with Asia in general.


Switzerland welcomes the conclusion of the new disaster risk reduction framework

Following days of negotiations, the delegations at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Reduction (WCDRR) in Sendai, Japan, have adopted a new international framework, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030), which sets out the priorities for disaster risk reduction for the next 15 years. Manuel Bessler, the delegate of the Federal Council for Swiss Humanitarian Aid and head of the Swiss delegation in Sendai, welcomed the new framework, which will give new impetus to the world in the field of disaster prevention.
