Nigeria, ACF, Nutrition and WASH assistance for Conflict-Affected Populations in North-East Nigeria
Since 2009, northeast Nigeria has been affected by insecurity as a result of armed conflict-related violence. The resulting humanitarian crisis has impacted over 14.8 million people, left 7 million in need of humanitarian assistance and displaced over 1.8 million people. With co-funding from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), ACF is complementing this nutrition intervention with WASH activities that will improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities and increase knowledge on hygiene behaviours and sanitation practices.

Background |
Since the start of the conflict, 60% of pre-existing health centres have been damaged or destroyed in Borno, resulting in significantly reduced access to health and nutrition services, and increasing pressure on the existing services in the IDP camps and host communities. Even prior to the insurgency, northern Nigeria struggled with high malnutrition rates and poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) indicators. ACF, in partnership with the Bomo State Primary Health Care Development Agency , conducted a mini nutrition assessment through SDC funding that identified preliminary GAM rates in Somo at 19.1%, which is very alarming and well above t' e WHO "critical" emergency GAM rates classification (>15%). Displacement increased the use of Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition services in camps by 49% in Bomo, overburdening staff and facilities. |
