Child Protection in Tourism, Phase II
This project will contribute to improving quality and competitiveness in travel and tourism, an economic sector providing significant economic and employment benefits in developing countries. By strengthening a voluntary sustainability standard, the proposed project will support institutional expansion and infrastructure development for TheCode.org, in order to prevent and combat sexual exploitation of children in tourism and to improve the tourism sector's sustainability and competitiveness. The specific objectives of this proposal include the establishment of the Tourism Child-Protection Code of Conduct as a voluntary sustainability standard and quality control mechanism in tourism, and to strengthen its global organizational structure- to improve the quality of the Code implementation, by strengthening the national, regional and international implementation- to support the implementation of the Code in Switzerland through the local code representative (LCP), ECPAT Switzerland.

| Contexto |
The Code was originally elaborated in 1997 by ECPAT Sweden, in the wake of rising concern about sexual exploitation of children in tourism and travel. The Code was registered as an international non-profit association in Sweden in 2004. Subsequently and with UNICEF support the secretariat of The Code moved to New York, where it was hosted by ECPAT USA. Between 2001 and 2010 the number of The Code signatory companies went from 8 to 989. SECO decided to support this initiative from 2011 as it has a direct link to the topic of tourism. |

Overgoal : Ensure the establishment and functioning of The Code organization (www.thecode.org), a global network and a tool which contributes to the protection of children against sexual expoitation of children in travel and tourism (SECTT). |
