Industrial Energy Efficiency

Proyecto terminado

The project is a collaboration between the UNIDO, the Departments of Trade and Industry (DTI) and of Energy (DoE) financed by SECO and DFID (UK). The project aims at a shift in industrial energy use practices in South Africa and possibly in the Southern African Region, with a view for industry to achieve a greater energy efficiency, in order to improve energy security and ensure continuity in power supply.

Contexto

South Africa's industry and production is highly energy intensive. South Africa uses almost four times more energy than OECD countries to produce products of equivalent financial value. Electrical consumption per capita shows how South Africa uses ten times more electricity per capita than the African average, uses double the world average and uses about 60% of the OECD average.

Objetivos

The project overall goal is to increase energy efficiency in South Africa in order to contribute to national efforts to improve energy security and electricity supply continuity while seeking that GDP growth is not constrained by energy shortages and rising prices.
