Swiss aid convoys to eastern Ukraine reach initial destinations

Switzerland's eighth aid consignment has arrived in eastern Ukraine. It consists of six convoys, three of which are being sent across the line of contact to the region outside of Kyiv's control. The aid deliveries are mainly comprised of water treatment chemicals and medical supplies and equipment. This includes treatments for tuberculosis (TB) in the Luhansk area, which currently has the highest incidence of the disease in Europe.

Last year the focus of Switzerland's international cooperation was on emergency assistance, combating poverty and inequality, and contributing to solutions to major global challenges. This is highlighted in the 2017 annual report on international cooperation, published today by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER), for the first time in online format only. This commitment is in Switzerland's own interests, as our prosperity and security are both largely determined by the international context.

Le président du Bénin Patrice Talon a été reçu mardi 22 mai 2018 par le président de la Confédération Alain Berset à l’occasion d’une visite officielle en Suisse. Les entretiens, qui ont eu lieu à la résidence du Lohn près de Berne, ont porté sur la coopération au développement et les relations économiques bilatérales. Il s’agit d’une visite de réciprocité de la part du président Patrice Talon, qui fait suite au voyage effectué au Bénin un an plus tôt par la présidente d’alors, Doris Leuthard.
Preserving varieties, promoting biodiversity and improving food security

The SDC supports seed banks to preserve varieties and give smallholder farmers access to high-quality seeds. Providing smallholder farmers with training and further education in the production of healthy seeds and in business management is an important part of the project, which makes it possible to transform a seed bank into an economically viable company. The approach is now being integrated into national legislation in Uganda, and is being used as the basis for establishing seed banks in other regions of the country.

In addition to bilateral matters, the meeting focused on the current situation in the region, which is characterised by various conflicts. A stable nation in the Middle East, Jordan plays a significant role in Switzerland's foreign policy as an important partner in dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will undertake his first trip to the Middle East as head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) from 13 to 15 May 2018. The visit to Jordan will focus on a meeting in Amman with the Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, and a visit to the Palestinian refugee camp in Jerash, where he will meet with members of a school students’ parliament. Mr Cassis will also inaugurate the new Swiss embassy building in Amman.

At its meeting on 25 April 2018, the Federal Council approved a budget of CHF 40 million for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for the 2019–21 period. With this decision, Switzerland will, in the coming years, support 44 million farmers in remote areas where poverty is especially widespread. In the previous 2010–15 period, IFAD projects reached approximately 139 million people, for example by establishing rural savings banks that issue small loans to fund economic activities.

On the occasion of the second Syria conference, held by the EU and UN in Brussels on 24-25 April, Switzerland is increasing its commitment to the Syrian crisis. In 2018 it will allocate CHF 61 million to support the population in need in Syria and neighbouring countries and a further CHF 7 million to promote peace in the region. Switzerland was represented at the conference by the FDFA's Deputy State Secretary Krystyna Marty.
