The approval process for projects within the frame of the Switzerland’s Enlargement Contribution unfolded in a satisfactory manner. The number of definitively approved projects virtually doubled in comparison with last year. Numerous projects that had been approved in the previous years were able to be further implemented according to plan.

Tras sus estudios de arquitectura en la Escuela Politécnica Federal de Lausana (EPFL) y su primera experiencia profesional en el extranjero, Mikhail Broger, de 35 años, empezó a trabajar en el Cuerpo Suizo de Ayuda Humanitaria en 2011. En octubre de ese mismo año, fue enviado al sur de Myanmar para su primera misión.

Asimismo, se ofrece una breve presentación de la COSUDE en cuanto organización.


Switzerland sends search and rescue specialists to Pakistan

Last Saturday, an avalanche buried a Pakistani military camp situated at an altitude of above 4570 metres near the Siachen glacier in the north of the country. According to Pakistani army sources, 124 soldiers and 11 civilians have been trapped under the avalanche. At the request of the Government of Pakistan, Switzerland sent three rescue experts to the scene of the accident on Monday. Switzerland has an international reputation for its search and rescue expertise in high mountains. The Humanitarian Aid of the Swiss Confederation is co-ordinating the mission.

In the Sahel region of West Africa more than 10 million people are facing serious food shortages due to the 2011 drought and the after-effects of the 2010 food crisis. Drawing from the experiences made in the Horn of Africa, Switzerland and other donors have reacted quickly in order to avert famine.

Las enfermedades crónicas representan un gran reto para nuestros sistemas sanitarios. Estas enfermedades son la principal causa de muerte en el mundo y constituyen el 75% de los gastos de salud a nivel mundial. El Foro de Salud de Ginebra examina soluciones innovadoras para hacer frente al problema. La conferencia internacional la organizan los Hospitales Universitarios de Ginebra y la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Ginebra con el apoyo de la COSUDE.


Switzerland’s water footprint is measured for the first time

The SDC, WWF together with the interdepartemental goup IDANE Wasser, have published the first ever report on Switzerland’s water footprint. Finding: 82% of the water required to produce all the goods and services consumed in our country comes from abroad. The report emphasises that Switzerland has a shared responsibility in respect of sustainable water management on a planetary level, and proposes a set of recommendations.


Regional Development and Modernization of the Justice System in the Czech Republic

Within the scope of the Swiss Enlargement Contribution to the Reduction of the Economic and Social Disparities in the enlarged European Union, a total of 10 projects for old-age-care homes have been granted funding totalling close to CHF 15 million. The enlargement contribution is also supporting two projects aimed at the modernization of the justice system. One of the projects is concerned with the successful reintegration of delinquents. In October 2011, Peter Künzle, a journalist at Swissinfo, paid a visit to the senior citizens home in Vsetin before going to Prague to get an idea for himself as to why it is so crucial for criminal offenders to be successfully reintegrated. Switzerland’s Enlargement Contribution to Latvia fully committed

The signing of the last project agreement in the frame of the Swiss Enlargement Contribution to Latvia took place in Riga on 1 February 2012. This event means that the entire amount of the CHF 60 million of Switzerland’s Enlargement Contribution earmarked for Latvia has now been fully committed.
