Switzerland is participating in the stabilisation of Somalia

Under the leadership of SDC Director-General Martin Dahinden, Switzerland will participate in the international conference on Somalia to be held in London on 7 May 2013. Last year, the Federal Council adopted a Horn of Africa Strategy 2013-2016. As part of this strategy, Switzerland will not only provide humanitarian aid, but also work on development cooperation, the promotion of peace and security, and migration. Switzerland will also support Somalia in the development of federal and decentralised government structures.

On 6 May 2013, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA received Mark Dybul, the executive director of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund) since the beginning of the year, for an official meeting. The talks focused on Switzerland’s support for the Global Fund, which was founded in 2002 with seat in Geneva and is among Switzerland’s most important strategic partners in the worldwide fight against infectious diseases.

«Si nous nous couchons, nous sommes morts» declared the Burkinabe historian Joseph Ki-Zerbo. If we lie down and give up, we are dead. African authors and publishers will meet in Geneva from 1 to 5 May for the Geneva Book Fair, proving once again that African literature is alive and well, and that putting one's words down on paper is a way of standing tall and proud. The SDC has shown its commitment to this cause through its support for the African Fair for Books, Press and Culture over the past 10 years.

Cada minuto muere un niño a causa de la malaria. La COSUDE apuesta por la prevención y el acceso a la atención médica. Financiando un programa de mosquiteros en Tanzania ha contribuido a reducir en un 44% la mortalidad infantil en el país entre 2007 y 2012. Un concurso de fotografía muestra cómo la población se puede proteger y cómo se puede incrementar el uso de los mosquiteros.

At the 2013 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, the ministerial steering committee of the IMF will consider the state of the global economy and measures to prompt its recovery and boost its resilience. The main topic for the Development Committee is the adoption of the new vision for the World Bank Group. In the run-up to the meetings, there will be a meeting of the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, to which Switzerland has also been invited.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will be visiting South America from 2 to 8 April. He is scheduled to visit Chile, Peru and Colombia during this trip under the triple theme of “water, the economy and human security”. In addition to meetings with political representatives of the three countries, the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will launch and visit projects in these three fields of action supported by Switzerland, as part of the Federal Council’s foreign affairs policy.

From 2013 to 2016, the management of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) plans to increase its activity in fragile contexts, to tackle global risks, to strengthen its cooperation with private industry and to step up monitoring of the effectiveness of development cooperation. These four priorities are set out in the dispatch on international cooperation approved by the Swiss Parliament in September 2012. The four priorities were illustrated at the SDC's annual press conference which was held on Thursday 4 April in Bern. Haiti was quoted as a case in point.

La comunidad internacional trabaja ya de forma intensiva para responder a esta cuestión. Michael Gerber, colaborador de la COSUDE, también participa activamente en la búsqueda de una solución que dé continuidad a estos objetivos. En cuanto Representante Especial para el desarrollo sostenible global después de 2015, es responsable de la elaboración de la posición de Suiza y de representarla en las instancias internacionales. Switzerland spent CHF 2,833 million of official development assistance (ODA) in 2012, an increase of 4,7% compared with 2011. In international terms, with an ODA of 0.45% of gross national income (GNI), Switzerland is 10th out of the 24 member countries of the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee, which published its rankings on 3 April.
