IRQ Oxfam – Integrated WASH and Protection response to conflict affected communities in Diyala governorate

Proyecto terminado

A majority of people living in rural northern Diyala do not have access to potable water which results in communities utilizing unsafe sources like rivers and irrigation channels. The lack of solid waste management systems further aggravates the poor health conditions within this area. This project aims at reducing water and sanitation related risks and increasing access to clean water for IDPs, returnees and host communities living in the districts of Kifri and Khanaqin. It also helps particularly vulnerable families access protection services.

Contexto

A majority of people living in rural northern Diyala do not have access to safe drinking water which results in the communities utilizing unsafe sources like rivers and irrigation channels, putting them at risk of health issues. Women and girls are the most adversely affected by these urgent hygiene needs. The lack of solid waste management systems aggravates the poor environmental and living conditions of the targeted area and further deteriorates the water quality.

Protection needs are also high for men and women living in Diyala and most are unaware of available protection services. Families lack information about entitlements and available services in return areas which prevents them from taking an informed decision on whether to return or to remain. Due to the perceived lack of security in return areas, many of those displaced in Diyala are expected to remain in displacement for months to come.

Objetivos Contributing to improved health and enhanced resilience of conflict affected women, men, girls and boys.
