Las explotaciones agrícolas familiares y pequeñas contribuyen considerablemente a suministrar alimentos a la creciente población mundial, mantienen y crean puestos de trabajo en las zonas rurales y pueden contrarrestar el éxodo rural. Necesitan el acceso a mercados estables, una infraestructura adecuada, así como el acceso a la formación y a servicios de información y financieros. La COSUDE ayuda a este tipo de explotaciones a adaptarse a los cambios y a intensificar su producción de forma sostenible.

La Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO) califica de pequeños productores a quienes cuentan con un terreno no superior a las 10 hectáreas para vivir de la ganadería, los bosques o la pesca. En las pequeñas explotaciones agrícolas, la familia es el pilar fundamental, bien en la producción, bien en el mantenimiento de la explotación. La familia suele situarse en el centro, ya sea en la producción o en la gestión de la explotación. Además, la familia consume una parte de la producción. En comparación con las grandes explotaciones, la productividad del trabajo de las explotaciones agrícolas familiares y pequeñas es cerca de un tercio inferior. Sin embargo, o precisamente por ello, Suiza está convencida de que brindar apoyo a las explotaciones familiares y pequeñas puede contribuir a reducir el hambre y la pobreza en el mundo.

La COSUDE ayuda a las explotaciones familiares y pequeñas de los países en desarrollo principalmente a adaptarse a los continuos cambios (climáticos y de disponibilidad de medios y métodos de producción o bien de demanda del mercado) y a aumentar y mejorar su producción.

Strengthening the Right to Adequate Food, FIAN International

With 815 million undernourished people in 2017, the right to food as laid in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights is still not realized. For the past thirty years, FIAN International has raised awareness about people’s right to food worldwide and expanded spaces for civil society to hold governments more accountable. This project will promote effective participation of rights holders in food security and nutrition policies and governance mechanisms and be complemented by SDC support  to the mandate of the UN Special rapporteur on the right to food.


Generating Rubber Opportunities project (GRO)

The production of natural rubber is a key livelihood activity of farmers in Mon and Kayin State and northern Tanintharyi region. CARE International is mandated to implement a Market Systems Development project to work with all market actors and particularly the support institutions (meso level) for improving information, market access and access to inputs for 25,000 farmers as well as improving working conditions of particularly women in rubber plantations.

Los actores de la cadena de valor del cacao centroamericano mejoran su productividad, establecen alianzas público-privadas, respetan los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales y reducen su impacto ambiental. Gracias al programa, 4.500 familias productoras aumentarán sus ingresos anuales netos en al menos un 10%, mientras que 4.000 adultos jóvenes y 2.000 mujeres obtendrán acceso a empleos sostenibles. Esto impulsará la economía local en las áreas pobres y periféricas en las que se cultiva el cacao.


Livestock Development expanding from South to North in the South Caucasus

Livestock farming is the main economic activity for most poor households in rural areas of Armenia and Georgia. Through better access to services, inputs and markets, as well as effective management of natural resources, farmers in Armenia are expected to substantially improve their livelihood. Strengthening regional links and access to regional markets of animal and animal products will also make the livestock sector more profitable and increase its competitiveness, hereby contributing to higher incomes and employment for farmers in rural Armenia and Georgia.


Facility for Refugees, Migrants, Forced Displacement and Rural Stability (IFAD)

Switzerland is committed at the highest political level to help countries in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region coping with the refugee crisis. By co-financing two projects funded by IFAD (the International Fund for Agricultural Development) in Jordan and Lebanon, SDC will contribute to create sustainable livelihoods for thousands of Syrian refugees, and will also support host communities to increase their income and food security by improving the quality of their small ruminants and cattle, as well as their value in the market.
 


Technical Assistance Facility for Sustainable Business Development in Agriculture

This publicly supported fund provides technical support (training, marketing, organization dev., business plans) to medium sized enterprises active in agriculture and food processing in several developing countries alongside with capital investments from private impact investors. Impact investors seek to generate a social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. The fund is a public private partnership that will trigger an estimated $30m in private capital and improve the output market for approx. 200k family farms. 


Lao Upland Rural Advisory Services (LURAS)

The rapid transformation of the rural economy brings smallholder farmers in contact with a wide range of new service providers (private agribusiness companies, farmer organisations, non-profit associations). The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) recognizes that greater pluralism in service provision is needed. LURAS supports a multi-stakeholder market-based approach to promote demand-driven service provision to farmers and strengthen the capacities of farmers’ organizations.


CABI Plantwise Programme

Plantwise is a global programme led by CABI to increase food security and improve rural livelihoods by reducing crop losses. Local plant clinics provide farmers with practical plant health advice, reinforced by the Plantwise knowledge bank, an online gateway to plant health information. Plantwise strengthens national plant health systems from within, enabling countries to provide farmers with the knowledge they need to lose less. Plantwise aims at reaching over 30 million farmers in up to 34 countries by the end of 2020.

En Afrique de l’Ouest, le faible accès aux services financiers ne permet pas de moderniser les exploitations familiales et de développer des activités productives. La DDC soutient la stratégie régionale d’inclusion financière de l’Union économique et monétaire ouest-africaine et la Swiss Capacity Building Facility pour accroitre l’accès à de nombreux jeunes et femmes aux services financiers et leur offrir des opportunités économiques permettant ainsi de s’attaquer aux causes de la migration et de l’insécurité.

SDC - ECDPM Partnership 2017-2020: Promoting PCSD concept work and implementation

The 2030 Agenda calls for joint actions across national borders, economic sectors and cultures for managing global risks and achieving a transition towards global sustainable development. As stipulated in the Agenda 2030 and resumed in the dispatch on Switzerland’s International Cooperation 2017-20, policy coherence for (sustainable) development will play a key role as a means of implementation. The SDC –ECDPM Partnership aims at providing analysis, policy solutions, and practical support to implement them, to SDC and development partners in general.


Improving seed systems for smallholder farmers‘ food security

Smallholders often use informal seed systems to meet their seed needs. The project increases the access, availability and necessary diversity of adapted seeds to smallholders to reduce their vulnerability to shocks and contribute to their food and nutrition security. In national and global policy dialogues improved and pluralistic seed systems that better respond to the reality and the needs of smallholders are promoted and smallholders will get political recognition for their role in germplasm conservation.
