Contribution to WHO Emergency Response for the Flooding and Mudslide Event in Freetown, Sierra Leone
On the night of 13 August 2017, the city of Freetown in Sierra Leone and its outskirts experienced torrential rains and landslides. At least 497 people were killed following the collapse of a hillside. 800 people are still missing and 3’000 were displaced. Given the low water quality and poor living conditions of the affected population, there is a serious risk of cholera outbreaks and diseases to spread. With SDC Humanitarian Aid’s (SDC HA) support, WHO will contribute to the detection, prevention and control of disease outbreaks in the aftermath of the mudslides and flooding.
