| Contexto |
An important challenge with mining is to translate its potential to benefit host countries (their economy, people and environment). A means to ensure responsible behaviours by extractive companies is to recognise leading companies for their contribution and, in doing so, to stimulate lagging companies to do better, by making best practices public and ranking companies accordingly. An important tool to do that is an Index on responsible mining. A feasibility showed that such an Index is feasbile, would be relevant, effective and would add value. |
| Objetivos |
The overall goal of the Responsible Mining Index (RMI) is to encourage continuous improvement in responsible mining by transparently measuring and ranking the performance of mining companies on economic, environmental, social and governance (EESG) issues and highlighting leading practice. Measuring and ranking companies will: 1. positively motivate mining companies to do better. 2. provide useful comparative information. 3. and provide evidence of improved company practice. |
| Efectos a medio plazo |
Mining companies are recognised for leadership and leading practice in EESG performance. Mining companies have access to comparative data on leading EESG practice, enabling shared learning. Mining companies experience a raised profile and awareness of EESG. Governments, investors and other stakeholders have access to EESG company data with potential to articulate expectations and use in negotiations and decision-making. Clear articulation of what society expects from mining companies. Independent, multi-issue ranking data influences mining sector discourse. Contribution to the international body of knowledge on EESG issues in the mining sector. |
