China: Rehabilitation and management strategy for over-pumped aquifers under a changing climate

01.09.2018 - 31.12.2021

In the past 30 years the aquifers in the North China plain have been over-exploited. Based on cutting-edge Sino-Swiss expertise in real-time groundwater monitoring and modelling, the project will implement groundwater and agricultural management policies to stabilize groundwater levels as a buffer to climate change induced droughts. The project will work with farmers and local authorities to facilitate policy uptake. Findings are relevant for many water-stressed countries and will be shared globally.

Clean Air China (CAC): Breaking Down the Dome: Sino-Swiss Cooperation on Air Pollution Source Apportionment for Better Air

01.05.2018 - 31.10.2022

The project will support the development of advanced air pollution source apportionment techniques with a Swiss and Chinese joint expert team to enable the design of more effective air pollution control policies beneficial for public health, the global climate and the environment. The techniques and experience of science-based policy making will be piloted in Chinese cities and shared with other developing countries strongly affected by air pollution to accelerate progress towards cleaner air.

Sino-Swiss Low Carbon Cities Project (SSLCC)

01.03.2015 - 31.12.2019

The project will contribute to the efforts made by Chinese Metropolitan Areas to reduce the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity of their development through innovation and good practices from Switzerland. GHG sets in motion potentially irreversible effects including the rise of sea levels, drought or ice melting that put particular pressure on poor segments of societies worldwide. Nowadays, about 75% of GHG are emitted in urban housing, living and income generating activities. China is accountable for about 25% of the global GHG emissions.

China: Groundwater Rehabilitation under a changing climate

15.03.2014 - 31.07.2018

In the past 30 years the aquifers in the semi-arid North China Plain have been greatly overexploited. Climate change is increasing the drought problem. The project assesses measures to establish a long-term balanced regional water budget by water imports and water saving and applies complementary use of precipitation, surface water and groundwater. The system is based on real-time monitoring of groundwater tables and pumping rates and controlling pumping wells via a quota system. The insights of this project can be applied also in other countries.

Jinsha River Basin (JRB): Integrated Water Resources and Risk Management under Changing Climate

01.02.2014 - 31.12.2018

The effects of climate change on the Yangtze River are crucial for the economy, food production, livelihood safety and ecosystems of about one third of China’s population. The present project studies the Jinsha River Basin in the upper Yangtze, where glacier and climatic variability greatly influence the water regimes, and measures are needed for a sustainable, integrated water management, catering for hazard and water management, hydroelectricity and agricultural production, as well as biodiversity and human wellbeing, in the coming years.

Sino-Swiss Management Training Program for Sustainable Development (SSMTP4SD)

01.01.2014 - 28.02.2020

The SSMTP4SD is the new phase of the bilateral cooperation program between the Chinese Training Centre for Senior Personnel Management (CTCSPMO) and SDC. While it will continue to foster the modernization of human resources management and the development of civil servants in China, the program will focus its activities on environmental and social issues for the coming four years in line with China’s need and willingness to achieve sustainable economic development.

Dam Safety Enhancement Program

01.01.2013 - 31.12.2017

In China, about 98’000 dams are dedicated to flood control, irrigation, water supply and hydropower production. The vast majority of these reservoirs are dedicated to flood protection, irrigation, and water supply. Many of the dams present hazardous safety conditions, with inadequate surveillance procedures. In view of a changing climate, the role of these dams will increase in importance. The Dam Safety Enhancement Program (DaSEP) supports the Chinese authorities in improving the dam safety management.
