SUD, SRK, MPCA North Kordofan
The Swiss Red Cross (SRC) project Multipurpose Cash Assistance for IDPs and Host Communities in North Kordofan aims to enable vulnerable people to meet their basic needs with dignity and flexibility. At the same time, it strengthens local humanitarian capacity by supporting the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS). This intervention is particularly relevant considering Sudan’s ongoing conflict and displacement crisis, as it promotes people’s self-reliance, self-sufficiency, and increases their sense of autonomy.

| Contexte | North Kordofan is one of Sudan’s largest and most arid states, home to over three million people. The region has been severely affected by the ongoing conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), including a prolonged siege of El Obeid, the state capital, which only ended in February 2025. The aftermath has left widespread food insecurity, damaged infrastructure, and a severely strained humanitarian situation. Moreover, North Kordofan hosts thousands of newly displaced individuals fleeing violence in nearby areas, further stretching already limited resources. While local markets remain operational, they are affected by soaring inflation and logistical constraints, leaving basic needs such as food, healthcare, and shelter largely unmet. This context underscores the urgency for emergency interventions, including Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA), to address critical humanitarian gaps. |
| Objectifs | To address the humanitarian needs by providing cash assistance to meet basic needs to vulnerable and conflict affected households in Sudan. |
| Groupes cibles | 2,270 households in North Kordofan, consisting of the most vulnerable IDPs and host community members affected by the ongoing conflict and displacement crisis. |
| Effets à moyen terme | Access to essential goods and services is improved for vulnerable households in North Kordofan state |
| Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: Targeted households successfully receive CVA to meet their basic needs Principaux résultats antérieurs: SRCS North Kordofan Branch implemented a CVA project (phase 1) funded by SDC and Swiss Solidarity, reaching 2,120 households. This experience further strengthened the branch’s operational and financial management capacities and confirmed the feasibility of direct CVA delivery. Building on these developments, the extension phase will enable SRCS to consolidate its institutional capacity and continue implementing CVA in a structured manner during phase two to serve the affected population. |

The project is implemented in close coordination with national and sub-national Cash Working Groups, to ensure harmonization with other humanitarian actors and to avoid duplication. SRSC’ leadership in local coordination ensures integration with existing community structures and collaboration with government counterparts. The project is also aligned with other SDC-funded cash assistance interventions in Sudan, including the Cash Consortium Sudan (planned). |
