Core Contribution for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 2018 - 2020
SDC has been granting core contributions to IUCN since 1997. The new Core Contribution for the period 2018 – 2020 aims to highlight IUCN’s comparative advantage and development relevance. With this core contribution SDC contributes to the implementation of the IUCN Programme 2017-2020 and in particular to the integration of healthy and restored ecosystems into SDGs water (SDG 6), climate change (SDG13), environment (14/15) and food security (SDG2).

| Domaine de compétences | IUCN is a membership Union composed of government and civil society organizations. It provides public, private and non-governmental organizations with the knowledge and tools that enable human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together. IUCN is able to bridge the perspectives of different sectors and stakeholders for the purpose of influencing policy and practice relating to sustainable development. Its knowledge base and diverse membership make IUCN an incubator and trusted repository of best practices, tools, and international guidelines and standards. As the only environmental organization with official United Nations Observer Status, IUCN ensures that environmental issues can be brought to the attention at the highest level of international governance. |
| Priorités stratégiques de la Suisse et de l'organisation et leur cohérence | The SDG’s constitute the major reference for SDC’s appreciation of the development relevancy of IUCN’s programme. Biodiversity (and the respective UN Convention on Biodiversity, CBD) is strongly linked to the other two UN conventions on climate change (UNFCCC) and desertification (UNCCD), in particular with respect to adaptation measures and to the monitoring of ecosystem degradation and restauration. The maintenance of forests and the management of transboundary water systems are important to promote peace promotion and support climate change adaptation and mitigation. Thereby community benefits constitute the key element of development relevancy. |

IUCN has a long history of working on conservation issues with links to sustainable development. Through the explicit alignment with the 2030 Agenda, IUCN’s commitment towards development relevant goals has further increased. It is underpinned by a strong mandate from its Members who have adopted over 200 IUCN Resolutions calling for IUCN to promote nature-based solutions for major societal challenges including climate change, water security, disaster risk reduction, land degradation, food security and gender equity and equality. IUCN’s leadership of nature-based solutions in the 2030 Agenda builds on results and knowledge accumulated through decades of work on ecosystem management. |

IUCN has shown a unique role as a convenor for influencing policy, using scientific evidence, setting standards. The authority underpinning this convening function stems largely from its broad basis of membership and from the scientifically-informed work it undertakes, as well as from its effort to inform the decision-making and practices of policy-makers, civil society, private sector leaders and others across the global environment. By the end of 2016, 60% of IUCN projects contributed to the delivery of five SDGs: SDG 15 Life on Land (28.7%), SDG 13 Climate Action (15.5%), SDG 14 Life below Water (6.1%), SDG 6 Clean Water (5.3%) and SDG 1 No Poverty (4.4.%). A further 25% of project investment helped deliver on SDGs 5, 11, 12, 16, and 17. |
| Effets directs de l'engagement actuel de l'organisation | This partnership phase focuses on demonstrating IUCN’s role in development cooperation relevant thematic areas related to climate change and water. It aims at enhancing respective thematic dialogue between IUCN and SDC. It is expected to promote mutually beneficial synergies of efforts addressing in particular the conservation, restoration and enhancement of ecosystems in order to provide a range of services to people – particularly in geographical contexts where SDC is present and active to address poverty. The major SDGs concerned are linked to water (SDG 6), climate change (SDG13), environment (14,15) and food security (SDG 2). |

For the first time, this new phase of core-contribution to IUCN puts a strong focus on the development relevance of IUCN’s programme. It is jointly managed by the two Global Programmes Climate Change & Environment (GPCCE) and Water (GPW) of SDC. The first main outcome is to strengthen IUCN’s and SDC’s work through the integration of healthy and restored ecosystems as demand responsive contribution to priorities of the Agenda 2030 on water (SDCG 6), climate change (SDG 13), environment (SDG 14/15) and food security (SDG 2). The second main outcome is directly linked to the strategy and goals of GPW, i.e. sustainable water resources management in river and lake basins to integrate targets of the 2030 Agenda for ensuring water for all, sustainable and inclusive development, climate change resilience, ecosystem conservation and promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. The third main outcome is directly linked to the strategy and goals of GPCCE, i.e. transformation towards low-emission and climate resilient development enhanced through early adoption and implementation of internationally and nationally-endorsed nature-based solutions |

SDC is part of IUCNs framework partners – a dedicated group of donors who support the implementation of IUCN’s programme through the provision of multi-year core funding. The framework partners also support the implementation of a large number of on-the-ground projects throughout the world that have significant development and conservation results. |
