Strengthen accountability for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health
The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH) ensures that efforts of the many stakeholders involved in maternal, newborn, child health as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights, are well coordinated at global and national level. SDC supports PMNCH’s accountability work so as to contribute to more effective and efficient use of resources in this priority public health area, including of the funding provided by Switzerland.

| Contexte | Since 1990, globally the maternal mortality ratio – deaths of women dying during pregnancy and childbirth – has fallen by 44% and the death rate for children under the age of five has fallen by 53%. However, maternal mortality is still unacceptably high with worldwide some 800 women dying from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications every day. Trends are similar for related areas, such as contraception and sexually transmitted infections including HIV. The gap between global and national commitments and actual implementation is significant. Challenges include the lack of efficient accountability systems, especially at country-level, and limited coordination and alignments among the many actors in the area of maternal, newborn and child health as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights. The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH) has been founded in 2005 as a multi-stakeholder partnership to address these gaps and thus contribute to better health outcomes. Concretely, PMNCH improves analyses, alignment advocacy and accountability and works closely with the Global Financing Facility (for funding) and the UN and partners (for improving planning and implementation at country level). |
| Objectifs | Every woman, child and adolescent – in stable, fragile and humanitarian settings – realizes their right to physical and mental health and well-being; has social and economic opportunities; and is able to participate fully in shaping prosperous and sustainable societies |
| Groupes cibles | Direct target groups include stakeholders such governments, non-governmental organisations, civil society, UN an others who work in the area of women, children and adolescent health. Indirect target groups include women, children and adolescents in countries where the accountability resource kit will be used to help improve the access to, and quality of services. |
| Effets à moyen terme | Ensure effective tracking of goals of the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health and of national commitments in this area. This includes support to partners’ engagement and accountability at the national level as well as hosting of the Independent Accountability Panel. |
| Résultats |
Principaux résultats attendus: i)Improved stakeholders' ability to understand the evidence on accountability to date, monitor progress and enact remedial action; ii) Evidence and information disseminated and made accessible; iii) Partner actions aligned and empowered through facilitated joint implementation. Principaux résultats antérieurs: PMNCH has managed to unite over 1’000 members who work in a coordinated effort towards women’s, children’s and adolescent health and sexual and reproductive health and rights. It’s the only platform bringing together all constituencies in maternal, child and newborn health as well as sexual and reproductive health and rights (governments, UN, NGOs, CSOs, funds, private sector, academia, etc.). The Partnership was crucial in the development of the global reference strategy in this area, the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health 2016-30 and thereby ensure increased attention to adolescents’ health. |
