Andean Regional Initiative on Adaptation to Climate Change (ARIACC)
ARIACC aims to increase the resilience of Andean Family Agriculture to climate change by improving the implementation of relevant policies, building capacity, leveraging investments, scaling innovative practices and promoting regional and global knowledge exchange. Close multisectoral collaboration will ensure the sustainability and scaling of the initiative. The project builds on longstanding SDC experience in the region and consolidates successful achievements of Phase 1 while sharing them globally.

Contesto | Climate change impacts on farming, such as erratic weather patterns, drought, pest outbreaks, erosion and land degradation, are strongly felt in the LAC region, counting as the second most vulnerable to natural hazards. As in other mountainous regions of the world, the people of the Andes, their ecosystems and their livelihoods are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. At the same time, small-scale farmers are responsible for up to 70% of the food produced in low- and middle-income countries. At the last COP28 in Dubai 2023, the “Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action” estimated that only 0.8% of climate finance went to small-scale farmers. It emphasized the need to support family farmers through sustainable practices, technological innovations and adequate policies to reduce climate change impacts and enhance resilience. In the Andean region, effective policies and the consideration of climate impacts on water, agriculture and food security at national and subnational levels, the articulation between these government sectors and levels as well as access to funding are still inadequate and weak. Andean family farmers face high climate vulnerability with a significant lack of technical and financial assistance services and poor regional coordination. |
Obiettivi | Rural family farmers vulnerable to climate change living in Andean ecosystems in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru increase the resilience and adaptive capacity of their livelihoods by improving their food and water security. |
Gruppi target |
Direct beneficiaries and partners include decision makers at national and subnational levels in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru with a focus on Ministries of Environment, Agriculture and/or Rural Development, Agencies for Water and Agencies for Social Inclusion; private sector actors that facilitate technical and financial support for rural poor, vulnerable to climate change. Indirect beneficiaries are rural Andean family farmers vulnerable to climate change. |
