NRC: Protection Cluster Support 2016

Progetto concluso

Prolonged conflict has led to high levels of insecurity and displacement in South Sudan. This does not only require humanitarians to scale up and coordinate their interventions, but to also be creative and knowledgeable enough to respond to the needs of and provide protection to the affected populations. This is the third phase of a project that aims to improve contextual understanding among humanitarian actors and decision-makers in South Sudan in order to enable a more strategic and effective response, through independent protection and conflict analysis.

Contesto

Fighting continued between government and opposition forces in most parts of the country despite the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity in April 2016. This situation further escalated on 9 July 2016 with heavy fighting erupting in the capital Juba, ushering in new waves of violence and displacement. Similar incidents occurred in Wau, Kajo-Keji, Torit and Leer. This continued deterioration of the security situation has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian and protection environment in the country. An estimated 4.8 million were already in dire need of assistance, with over 2 million displaced, before the recent fighting.
