SSD, Concordis - Building resilience in Abyei and the surrounding borderlands of Sudan and South Sudan

• Nomadic herders

• Displaced populations (refugees, returnees, IDPs)
• Participants of local peace institutions

The planned phase aims to achieve:

1. Resilience to conflict is built through the establishment and/or the support of local community-based mechanisms for conflict prevention and management, with the active participation of women and youth.
2. Barriers to peaceful intercommunity relations are addressed.
3. Cross-border markets function fairly, inclusively and to mutual benefit.
4. Constructive linkages between peacebuilding work in the borderlands and decision making in the capitals are promoted.

Risultati principali attesi:  

Peace and governance strengthened: 100 Advisory Group members established; 720 peace actors trained.

Inclusive participation expanded: 120 women and 120 youth trained and represented in governance and dialogues.

Dialogue platforms established: 660 participants engaged; regular intercommunal dialogues institutionalized.

Markets and livelihoods improved: 90 market stakeholders trained; 120 users supported in livelihoods; cross-border markets functioning.

Early warning and climate adaptation: 20,000 people reached with alerts; migration routes negotiated and agreed.

Displacement tensions reduced: Refugees, returnees, and IDPs consulted; represented in peace structures.

Risultati fasi precedenti:  

• Established lasting intercommunal institutions, such as Peace Committee, Community Court, and Amiet Market, enabling dialogue, trade, and dispute resolution.
• Increased inclusion of women and youth in peace and justice structures.
• Strengthened community resilience to conflict and cross-border tensions.
• Improved humanitarian access and coordination in Abyei.
• Linked local peace mechanisms to regional and national processes.
• Proven sustainability of locally owned, economically grounded peace structures.

The programme will build on Concordis’ long-standing presence and buy-in in Abyei and the borderlands.

Activities are designed to complement the mandates and programmes of UNISFA, UNMISS, FAO, IOM, OCHA and UNHCR, as well as EU-funded projects run by Concern Worldwide (West Kordofan markets) and Care International (Sudan food security and markets).
