Choosing coffee over poppy - a public-private partnership (Myanmar)

In Southern Shan State infrastructure, access to basic services and income opportunities are scarce. Poverty and malnutrition are omnipresent and out-migration is high. Building on a private-public partnership with Malongo, a French coffee company and Walter Matter SA, a Swiss logistics firm, SDC supports the Green Gold coffee cooperative and its 900 members to become a sustainable and business-oriented organisation.

International Humanitarian Law, Security Sector Governance and Leadership in Transition

The project aims to increase the capacities of middle-ranked officers of the Myanmar Defence Forces to (1) drive forward reforms which improve the adherence of the Myanmar Defence Forces to Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, (2) to improve protection of civilians in armed conflict and (3) to support reforms towards democratic control of armed forces.

Allocation of SDC Funding to ICRC Operations in 2019

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to ICRC operations allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance for people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence.

Access to Health Fund (ACCESS)

The Access to Health Fund (previously 3MDG), is strongly committed to deliver health services in conflict-affected areas to populations beyond the reach of government. By supporting State and Ethnic Health Organizations, the fund contributes to trust, fosters coordination, and mitigates causes of conflict. The Swiss contribution represents a continuation of support to Myanmar's health actors towards achieving universal health coverage.

Primary Health Care (PHC)

01.01.2019 - 30.04.2023

The Primary Health Care project uses a convergent approach to improve the health status of vulnerable people in four conflict-affected townships in Kayin State. It contributes to peace, and brings together the Ministry of Health and Sports and Ethnic Health Organizations. Basic health services are strengthened through better coordination, training, supervision and supplies. Communities are empowered to achieve better health and feedback mechanisms are introduced.

Mekong Region Land Governance (MRLG) Phase 2

Land governance remains at the centre of development challenges in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV), and land expropriation is a key driver of new poverty and food insecurity. The governments in the region have begun to turn their attention to legal and policy issues on land governance. This creates an opportunity for MRLG and the Reform Actors it brings together, to contribute to improvements in policies and practices regarding land tenure security for family farmers.

Vocational Skills Development Programme (VSDP)

Over 11’000 women and men will directly benefit from improved access to relevant and recognised skill development and employment opportunities in selected urban and rural areas, particularly in the South East of Myanmar, Yangon and Mandalay. The programme will further contribute to strengthening the overall vocational training system in Myanmar through strategic partnerships with the government of Myanmar and private sector partners from selected industries.

Gulf of Mottama Project (GoMP)

One of the greatest challenges in the current reform process in Myanmar is the governance of natural resources. In the globally significant wetlands of the Gulf of Mottama (GoM), this project strengthens the capacities of government and communities to effectively manage, govern and value its coastal natural resources to sustainably improve livelihoods of people depending on them, while reducing the pressure on natural resource and conserving its unique environment and threatened biodiversity.

Generating Rubber Opportunities project (GRO)

01.01.2018 - 31.12.2023

The production of natural rubber is a key livelihood activity of farmers in Mon and Kayin State and northern Tanintharyi region. CARE International is mandated to implement a Market Systems Development project to work with all market actors and particularly the support institutions (meso level) for improving information, market access and access to inputs for 25,000 farmers as well as improving working conditions of particularly women in rubber plantations.

Access to Health Services: Three Millennium Development Goals Fund

The contribution builds on 3MDG’s recognized achievements in supporting poor and vulnerable women, children and people with HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Myanmar. The peace process opens avenues for 3MDG to working in conflict affected areas and reaching populations beyond the reach of the government. 3MDG is restructuring its pooled funding mechanism, in order to supporting Myanmar's health actors towards achieving universal health coverage.

Regional and Local Economic Development in the East West Corridor (RLED-EWEC)

01.08.2017 - 31.10.2019

The “Regional Local economic Development – East West Corridor” Project (RLED-EWEC)” has been implemented since 2013 by the Mekong Institute, an intergovernmental organisation with the mandate to build human resources capacities in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). The proposed two year phasing out will consolidate and scale up results. 5’500 smallholder farmer households will increase income and the environment for cross-border trade will be improved.

Livelihood and Food Security Trust Fund - LIFT

01.07.2017 - 31.12.2018

The Livelihood and Food Security Trust Fund for Myanmar (LIFT) managed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) receives contributions from 14 donors. LIFT plays an important role in coordinated donor support to agriculture and rural development. Up to now LIFT has reached 7.2 million people, 2.2 million people live in households with increased income and 326’000 households eat improved diets. With this additional Swiss support, successful LIFT projects will be scaled-up and led to sustainability by end 2018.
