Senior Counsellor for Humanitarian Affairs with the Permanent Representation of Switzerland to FAO, IFAD and WFP in Rome

The “Message on Switzerland’s International Cooperation in 2013-2016” clearly advocates for an increased international engagement. WFP is Switzerland’s largest humanitarian UN partner. In April 2012, the ECOSOC in New York elected Switzerland as Board member of the WFP Executive Board – the governing body of the WFP – for the years 2013-2014. In order to represent Switzerland in the WFP Executive Board, a Senior Counsellor for Humanitarian Affairs will be placed at the Permanent Representation of Switzerland to FAO, IFAD and WFP.

Contesto

Hunger is one of the greatest threats to humanity, affecting close to one billion people across the globe. The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger and under-nutrition. It is Switzerland’s largest humanitarian United Nations partner and receives the largest amount of Swiss Humanitarian Aid support to any UN organization. The WFP Executive Board is the governing body of the WFP and as such oversees WFP's humanitarian and development food aid activities. It is an important decision-making body. It is composed of 36 States to be elected by the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and the Council of FAO. In April 2012, the ECOSOC in New York elected Switzerland as Board member of the WFP Executive Board for the years 2013 and 2014. In order to represent Switzerland in the WFP Executive Board, a Senior Counsellor for Humanitarian Affairs will be placed at the Perma-nent Representation of Switzerland to FAO, IFAD and WFP.

Obiettivi

The posting in Rome shall strengthen the work of SDC/Humanitarian Aid and allow for a continued effective cooperation between the SDC/Humanitarian Aid, SDC Global Institutions, the Rome Mission and the Rome-based agencies. Moreover, the continued involvement and the regular dialogue shall further ensure a quality representation of Swiss values, policies, programmes and interests in Rome.

Effetti a medio termine

  • The impact of Swiss positions on humanitarian assistance, emergency aid and food security policies are strengthened.
  • Swiss priorities, policies and interests in the WFP Executive Board meetings and other relevant fora dealing with humanitarian assistance and emergency aid are adequately defended and promoted.
  • The humanitarian principles, standards and good practices are correctly and properly reflected in relevant Rome-based institutions, networks and processes.

    Risultati fasi precedenti:  

    In Rome, Switzerland can play a critical role and has a unique voice. The previous presence of SDC/Humanitarian Aid representatives in Rome allowed for a quality representation of Swiss values, policies, programmes and interests in Rome, not only during the Board meetings, but throughout the year, and has therefore strengthened Switzerland’s position.
