Pakistan: DRC/ICMC, Provision of WASH Services to Afghan Refugees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Access to clean drinking water and a proper sanitation environment for Afghan refugees, especially women and children, is difficult in refugee camps in Pakistan. The project contributes to the reduction of water borne diseases and thus the improvement of living conditions in the selected camps in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project foresees improvement and construction of WASH infrastructure, the support of the Afghan refugees with its management and the link to local authorities for the sustainability of the project.

Contesto |
Pakistan hosts 1.5 million registered Afghan Refugees living in camps and with host communities (plus over one million that are unregistered). Lack of access to safe drinking water, basic sanitation and poor hygiene practices remain among the most significant obstacles preventing them from living a healthier life. In the refugee camps there is a huge need for access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. The need for new water pumps or rehabilitation of existing water pumps is manifest in most of these refugee villages as few infrastructural improvements related to WASH have been carried out in recent years. The issue is significant as contaminated water is a main driver of diarrheal and other water borne diseases, while poor sanitation and prevailing poor hygiene practices compound the adverse health effects and spread of such diseases. |
Obiettivi |
To reduce water borne diseases and improve the living conditions of Afghan refugees residing in the selected camps in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through community led water and sanitation service delivery and hygiene education. |
Gruppi target |
The total beneficiaries are around 60'000 Afghan refugees. |
