Contribution to the Sixth Assessment Cycle of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
The Intergovemental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) provides governments with scientific evidence to inform climate policies and international climate change negotiations. The project will strengthen evidence and representation of mountain regions from developing countries in the next IPCC report, strengthen the IPCC science-policy dialogue in Switzerland on these matters, establish science-policy dialogues in 5 dev. countries and launch a mentoring programme for young climate scientists.

| Contesto | The objective of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is to provide governments at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies. IPCC reports are also a key input into international climate change negotiations. Several SDC partners are strongly engaged as lead authors in the current IPPC assessment report, notably on mountain chapters and chapters related to climate resilient development pathways. These partners will receive institutional support for additional human resources (specifically in form of chapter scientists from developing countries), strengthen the IPCC science-policy dialogue in Switzerland, establish science-policy dialogues in 5 developing countries and launch a mentoring programme for young climate scientists. |
| Obiettivi | Evidence about climate change impacts and adaptation strategies in mountain areas and climate resilient development pathways is strengthened in the IPCC Sixth Assessment (AR6) process. The project will contribute to increase evidence, regional representation and capacity-building of developing countries in the IPCC process, whilst ensuring its relevance and legitimacy through participatory processes and dialogues for sustainable development-focused policy making. |
| Gruppi target | Young climate scientists from developing countries, climate scientists and development practitioners in Switzerland and at ICIMOD, national IPCC stakeholders in 5 developing countries. |

The organisations receiving support are engaged in several SDC projects on mountains, notably IHCAP, 3SCA, GLACIARES+, PACC, CICADA and will feed projects findings into the IPCC process. A new GPCCE programme on Climate Change Adaptation in mountains will be launched in 2019 and provides another opportunity to including findings of the IPCC reports in national and regional processes. |
