Switzerland is supporting the travelling exhibition AQUA, which will open to the public in Geneva on 22 March on the occasion of World Water Day. AQUA is a project by ART for The World, an NGO that links up contemporary art, human rights and sustainable development.

The SDC ends its work in Bhutan amid encouraging signs of a burgeoning democracy

Switzerland's development cooperation with Bhutan began in the mid-1960s. The SDC funded rural development projects run by Helvetas for several decades before getting involved in the governance sector upon the request of the Bhutanese authorities. Within 10 years, clear progress had been made. The SDC's work in Bhutan is coming to an end in early 2017.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter opened the 34th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday 27 February 2017. He stressed that “human rights are a joint response to a harsher, more uncertain world.” Mr Burkhalter also held several bilateral meetings.

World Humanitarian Summit 2016, Istanbul

The first World Humanitarian Summit will take place in Istanbul on 23 and 24 May 2016. Switzerland places particular emphasis on strengthening compliance with international humanitarian law and adopting a long-term approach to the provision of assistance.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter visited countries in Africa and Europe (7,8,9.03.2016)

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter visited the scene of the attacks in Ouagadougou.

On Monday 7 March, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter set off on a tour during which he visited four countries in three days. In Africa the head of the FDFA visited Burkina Faso, a priority country for Swiss development cooperation. He arrived then in Nigeria, the country in Africa with the largest population and economy, where he opened the new Swiss consulate in the economic capital Lagos. Mr Burkhalter finally made an official visit to Malta, before travelling to Slovakia. Slovakia and Malta are the next two countries to assume the six-month presidency of the European Union.
