At its meeting on 23 May 2018, the FDFA informed the Federal Council that it would reopen a consulate general in Chicago in 2019 in order to step up efforts to promote Switzerland's economic interests in the Midwest of the United States. The network of Swiss representations abroad, which currently comprises 170 representations, is regularly adapted to changing circumstances in order to best meet Switzerland’s interests.

Le président du Bénin Patrice Talon a été reçu mardi 22 mai 2018 par le président de la Confédération Alain Berset à l’occasion d’une visite officielle en Suisse. Les entretiens, qui ont eu lieu à la résidence du Lohn près de Berne, ont porté sur la coopération au développement et les relations économiques bilatérales. Il s’agit d’une visite de réciprocité de la part du président Patrice Talon, qui fait suite au voyage effectué au Bénin un an plus tôt par la présidente d’alors, Doris Leuthard.

Drones are shaping the airspace of the future. Switzerland is one of the high flyers in drone technology, and Swiss companies are among the most innovative in the sector. Presence Switzerland, part of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), is now set to carry this momentum worldwide with its 'Switzerland – home of drones' campaign to strengthen Switzerland's position as a leading innovation and technology hub. The campaign will be launched at the Viva Technology show in Paris from 24–26 May 2018.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has met Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi in Amman for bilateral talks. In addition to bilateral matters, the meeting focused on the current situation in the region, which is characterised by various conflicts. A stable nation in the Middle East, Jordan plays a significant role in Switzerland's foreign policy as an important partner in dealing with the Syrian refugee crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On Monday, 14 May, President Alain Berset was received in Latvia for a state visit. The Baltic republic is celebrating the centenary of its independence this year. The visit provides an opportunity to acknowledge the excellent bilateral relations that exist between the two countries and discuss ways of deepening them. The discussions also covered a range of international issues.

Switzerland strengthens its presence in Jordan: On 13 May 2018, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis inaugurated the new Swiss embassy building in the Jordanian capital Amman. With the new premises the diplomatic and consular sections and international cooperation will work together under the same roof. The new integrated embassy underscores the importance of Jordan for Swiss foreign policy. In addition, it enhances the coherence of Switzerland’s activities to help the people in the country, many of whom are affected by the various conflicts in the region.

A number of staff changes at head office in Bern and in several Swiss representations have been announced for 2018/2019. The changes will take place as part of the usual transfer rotation and on the basis of appointments made by the Federal Council. The appointment of heads of mission abroad becomes effective following approval by the respective host state.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will undertake his first trip to the Middle East as head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) from 13 to 15 May 2018. The visit to Jordan will focus on a meeting in Amman with the Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, and a visit to the Palestinian refugee camp in Jerash, where he will meet with members of a school students’ parliament. Mr Cassis will also inaugurate the new Swiss embassy building in Amman.
