Switzerland's official development assistance in 2015

With an official development assistance (ODA) rate of 0.52% of its gross national income (GNI), Switzerland remained in 2015 in the top third of donor countries according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Switzerland ranks 8th among the 29 member states of the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC), which will publish its ranking this Wednesday. Switzerland spends over 13% of its ODA on hosting asylum seekers during their first year in Switzerland.


Switzerland to participate in the 2020 World Expo in Dubai

At its meeting today, the Federal Council decided to participate in the 2020 World Expo in Dubai, the theme of which will be "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future". The total budget for Switzerland's presence will be CHF 15 million, half of which is to come from sponsorship activities. Dubai Expo 2020 will offer a promising communication platform on which to highlight Switzerland's strengths in the fields of education, research, innovation, business and foreign policy. The Federal Council has mandated Presence Switzerland within the FDFA to start the preparatory work and to submit the dispatch to the Federal Assembly to apply for the credit commitment in early 2017.


Switzerland to support the reform of the civilian security sector in Mali and Ukraine

Today, Switzerland and the European Union (EU) have signed two agreements on Switzerland's participation in EUCAP Sahel Mali, the EU's civilian mission for the reform of the security sector in Mali, and in EUAM Ukraine, the EU advisory mission for civilian security sector reform in Ukraine. These two agreements form the basis for the secondment of Swiss civilian experts to these missions.

The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergej Lavrov met in Moscow on Monday to review relations between Switzerland and Russia. They covered a wide range of matters relating to international politics, and Mr Burkhalter emphasised the importance of seeking solutions that will lead to a resolution of conflicts.

Switzerland launches Foreign Policy Action Plan on Preventing Violent Extremism

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), unveiled Switzerland’s Foreign Policy Action Plan on Preventing Violent Extremism at the Geneva Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism co-organised by the UN and Switzerland on 7 and 8 April 2016. Switzerland is using this initiative to contribute towards combating terrorism through preventative measures by strengthening the resilience of individuals and communities. The UN Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism launched in December 2015 was in turn well supported by the high-ranking state representatives attending the conference who also highlighted the UN’s key role in this area.

They discussed the situation in Europe and Switzerland's policy towards the EU, security issues, policy measures to support peace and bilateral topics. It was decided that the FDFA and the German Federal Foreign Office would cooperate more closely in future to train mediators.
