Development cooperation and humanitarian aid from the UN

Poverty, AIDS, environmental degradation and water scarcity are just a few of the challenges that individual countries can no longer meet on their own. The United Nations (UN) play a central role in development cooperation and humanitarian aid worldwide. Switzerland also participates in the commitment of the international community.

In recent years Switzerland has channelled around 40% of its public development aid through international organizations. It is one of the most important providers of funds for the UN’s most significant development programmes.

Switzerland makes financial contributions and participates actively in the executive organs of these organizations. Most Swiss public funds for development are reserved for bilateral projects, which however are coordinated with UN programmes.

Czech republic: Small-scale environmental projects

A Swiss-backed fund supported 33 environmental projects put forward by different municipalities and organisations. For example, the town of Prachatice organised seminars and excursions on the theme of waste separation and composting. Another project breathed new life into the Negrelli Viaduct in Prague, inviting restaurants, shops and exhibitions to open under its arches.

The flyer provides information on the content of the 2030 Agenda – with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals – adopted by the UN member states in 2015. It also provides an overview of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda by Switzerland, cooperation with non-governmental and sub-national stakeholders and reporting to the UN.

Annual Report 2015 SDC / SECO - Swiss International Cooperation

The Annual Report shows in five sections how in 2015 the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) opened up new prospects for the populations of their partner countries. In addition, the SDC provided emergency aid on the ground to the victims of armed conflicts and to forcibly displaced people.

The 'Statistics 2015' booklet of the Annual Report consists of two parts, one presenting key figures on official development assistance (ODA) and the other the annual expenditures of the SDC and of the SECO. The booklet contains tables and graphs providing readers with a detailed overview of Switzerland's international cooperation activities.




Report on the SDC's work against gender-baded violence

Addressing Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) is a topic in which SDC has amassed considerable experience over the last 15–20 years. This document brings together and analyses the knowledge generated over these years. Today SDC is supporting programmes directly addressing SGBV in 12 different countries, with a financial envelope of over CHF 10 million per annum.

With this Foreign Policy Action Plan on Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE), Switzerland wants to contribute to counter-terrorism through preventative measures. Tackling direct and structural causes of violent extremism requires long-term, sustainable commitment in transitional and fragile contexts as well as in conflict zones.



Swiss Peace Supporter 1/2016

This edition is dedicated to the subject of prevention – in terms of health and security – for people working in peacebuilding missions. For these experts involved on the ground, both physical and mental factors are important to maintaining a healthy balance between work and free time, and to carrying out missions successfully. This edition also looks at the issue of gender within the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine and the experience of the OAS in demobilising the different armed groups in Colombia.



Swiss Enlargement Contribution Annual Report 2015

The annual report contains an overview of concrete results and the status of project implementation. Over 500 doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers from the new EU member states received scholarships in 2015 to do research in Switzerland. Bulgaria introduced legislation that provides for outpatient care based on the Swiss Spitex model, and Slovenia halved the heating and electricity bills of schools through energy efficiency renovations and renewable energies.



The Swiss contribution – Reports on the results of Swiss international cooperation 2013-16

For the first time the SDC and SECO report together on the results achieved by Swiss international cooperation. The folder contains the reports “The achievements of the «SDC and SECO takes stock». Their purpose is to inform on the results achieved within the framework of the 2013–2016 Dispatch to Parliament on International Cooperation. Available only in printed format.
