The climate cannot be stabilised merely by technical solutions. Gender equality and the fight against poverty are complementary approaches that also need to be taken into account at the Copenhagen Climate Conference. This is the recommendation of the UN State of the World Population Report which was presented in Bern on Friday, with accompanying comments by SDC director Mr Dahinden.

Switzerland today took over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers, the principal decision-making body of the Council of Europe, for a period of six months. Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), took over from her predecessor, the Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Žbogar, at a meeting of the Delegates of the Committee of Ministers in Strasbourg. At this meeting the head of the FDFA presented Switzerland's priorities.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) is extremely concerned about Israel's plans to extend the Jewish settlement in Gilo, East Jerusalem, by 900 apartments. It appeals to the Israeli government to end these activities immediately and to stop all settlement projects in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey received the visit of German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle for working discussions in Bern on Thursday, two weeks after his entry into office. Before the working meeting began, the German Foreign Minister paid a courtesy call on Swiss President Hans-Rudolf Merz.

The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Mrs Calmy-Rey received Mr Eduard Nalbandian, Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, for a working visit on Tuesday evening. Two agreements were signed at the meeting. One was an adaptation of the air traffic treaty of 1998, while the other concerned the issuance of visas to diplomats.

The Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, payed an official visit to Switzerland today Tuesday 10 November 2009.. His talks with Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey focused on Switzerland’s imminent accession to the chair of the Committee of Ministers, the Council of Europe’s decision-making body. Switzerland supports the Commissioner in his work in a number of ways, including the secondment of human rights experts.

A conference of experts organised by Switzerland in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) entitled “60 Years of the Geneva Conventions and the decades to come” began today at the International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG). Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger and the former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan attended the opening ceremony.

The third Global Forum on Migration and Development is due to take place in Athens 4-5 November, with 150 States in attendance. They will discuss the possibility of strengthening cooperation in these two areas. The Swiss delegation will be headed by the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary for International Migration Cooperation, Eduard Gnesa.

Switzerland sees the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions as an opportunity for strengthening humanitarian law, ensuring greater respect for its principles and better protection for the victims of armed conflicts. With this in mind Switzerland, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has organised a conference of government and international experts entitled “60 Years of Geneva Conventions and the decades to come”.
