Federal Council pays tribute to achievements of former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan was the secretary-general of the United Nations from 1997 until 2006. In October 2001 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with the UN. The attacks of 11 September and resulting conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan took place during his time in office.

Kofi Annan was a peace envoy until the end. His missions took him all over the world – from the Middle East and Africa to Latin America. Professionally, his base was in Geneva where he set up the Kofi Annan Foundation after his tenure as UN secretary-general. The foundation aims to promote global cooperation and strengthen the capacities of people and countries working for peace and security. For the Federal Council, Kofi Annan was always an important partner who was committed to International Geneva. In addition to his professional life, Kofi Annan also had a personal connection to Geneva and Switzerland. 

The Federal Council extends its deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
