The political situation in Myanmar, which is currently undergoing a process of opening up, will be the focus of the talks between Aung San Suu Kyi and Mr Burkhalter. The Head of the FDFA will also explain Switzerland's strategy on Myanmar, both with respect to relations between the two countries and as regards humanitarian aid programmes and development cooperation.
During her stay in Bern, Aung San Suu Kyi, who was elected to Parliament in Myanmar on 1 April, will visit the Swiss Parliament. She will be officially welcomed to the National Council and will meet the presidency of both chambers.
On her first journey to Europe in 24 years, Aung San Suu Kyi, who is chairperson of the National League for Democracy in Myanmar, will be received in Geneva at the International Labour Conference.
Both the Federal Council and Parliament are delighted that Aung San Suu Kyi will be visiting Switzerland.
