The visit took place against the backdrop of Hungary's presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2024. The aim of the meeting was to exchange views on Hungary's priorities and positions with regard to finance and taxation, and to present Switzerland's views. The meeting also provided an opportunity to deepen bilateral economic and financial relations with Hungary.
Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter stressed the value of such meetings: "Regular exchanges with the incoming EU presidency on financial and tax matters contribute to the understanding of mutual interests and improve cooperation."
Hungary has been a member of the European Union since 2004. Switzerland is one of the top five countries of origin for foreign direct investment in Hungary. The annual volume of trade between Switzerland and Hungary is around CHF 2.8 billion.
