Energy Efficiency Program in Artisanal Brick Kilns in Latin America to Mitigate Climate Change – Phase II

Project completed

Energy Efficiency Program's in Artisanal Brick Kilns in Latin America to Mitigate Climate Change (EELA) second phase will focus on making the market work for energy-efficient technologies and innovations developed and tested at pilot level during the first phase. The applied systemic approach allows both the scaling up of these innovations and influencing public policies, so that brick producers can achieve better economic and environmental performance. Experiences and results will further be discussed in the context of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC).

Background

Latin America contributes with 12% to the total global greenhouse gas emissions. Many countries are currently designing their mitigation action plans. Together with Switzerland, Mexico and Colombia are members of the CCAC, in which reduction of short-lived climate pollutants in the brick sector is one of the focal areas.

Objectives

Artisanal brick, lime and gypsum producers in Latin America contribute to climate change mitigation and increase their incomes by using higher energy efficiency technologies.

Target groups

The direct target group are artisan brick producers, as well as lime and gypsum producers (Bolivia).

Medium-term outcomes
  1. Disseminating alternative technologies and innovative and efficient products through a local and regional market approach;
  2. Impacting on public policies that promote the mitigation of greenhouse gas in the brick industry in partnership with the CCAC, and in the lime and gypsum sectors;
  3. Promoting and strengthening sustainable development (energy use, land use and health) in the brick, lime and gypsum sectors in Bolivia;
  4. Promoting a South-South exchange of knowledge.

Results

Results from previous phases:

Efficient technological models were validated. Knowledge was shared between producers, suppliers and decision makers of the region during visits, workshops and through the program’s virtual platform. EELA was presented at Rio +20 and received an award at the eighteenth session of the Conference of the Parties under Momentum for Change for its contribution to generate benefits and innovative mitigation measures. Brick producers were trained in energy efficiency, cost management, technological improvement, among others.
