Important information on visa to Switzerland


Short term visa (max. 90 days)

As of 1st November 2013, applicants for short term visa (max. 90 days) have to submit their application without prior appointment from Monday – Thursday 8 am – 1 pm and on Friday 8 – 10 am to the VFS Switzerland counter at the World Trade Center (WTC), Level 6, Echelon Square, Colombo 1.

Exceptions:
The following applicants for short term visa (max. 90 days) may submit their application directly to the Swiss Embassy after scheduling an appointment with the visa section of the Embassy: 

Living in Sri Lanka:

  • Spouses and children of Swiss or EU citizen
  • Diplomatic, Official or normal passports holders with a note from their Ministry
  • Applicants for urgent medical visas
  • Applicants attending funerals

Living in the Maldives:

  • Diplomatic or Official passport holders with a note from their Ministry may send their application through the Maldives High Commission in Colombo
  • Citizen and resident visa holders of the Maldives with previously issued Schengen visa may arrange the delivery of their application and the return of their passport through a courier company

The following applicants for long term visa (more than 90 days) may submit their application directly to the Swiss Embassy after scheduling an appointment with the visa section of the Embassy:

  • Work visa
  • Student visa
  • Family reunion visa
  • Humanitarian visa

REMEMBER TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT IN TIME. DURING THE PEAK SEASON THERE MAY BE A WAITING LIST FOR UP TO FOUR WEEKS. 

BEFORE APPLYING FOR YOUR SCHENGEN VISA, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ALREADY HAVE A VALID VISA FOR YOUR NEXT COUNTRY OF DESTINATION AFTER LEAVING THE SCHENGEN TERRITORY BASED ON YOUR PLANNED ITINERARY.
(For example if you are travelling to the UK after your stay in the Schengen territory, get the visa for the UK first and then only apply for your Schengen visa.)
