Baku, 04.08.2014 - Switzerland is deeply concerned about the detention of the human rights defender Leyla Yunus and her husband Arif Yunusov. Despite suffering from a serious health condition, Leyla Yunus has in the meantime been sent to three months of pre-trial detention. As Director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy, Leyla Yunus has been internationally recognized as promoting efforts to foster human rights in Azerbaijan and is instrumental in this field.

The news of Leyla Yunus’ arrest comes in a period in which Azerbaijani human rights defenders increasingly report difficulties to work and concerns about their personal safety. Human rights defenders are arrested – as it happened to Rasul Jafarov two days ago - put on trial and sentenced. The charges brought against them raise questions and observers report that the proceedings are marred by violations.

Leyla Yunus is one of Switzerland’s project partners when it comes to the implementation of its South Caucasus Cooperation Strategy. Switzerland is following the proceedings against her and her husband closely, as well as those against other human rights defenders, bearing in mind Azerbaijan’s special responsibility, as current chair of the Council of Europe, for upholding the principles of democracy and rule of law.
