U.S. citizens should not travel to Iran for any reason and should leave Iran if they are there. Iran continues to be a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination per the U.S. Travel Advisory for Iran.
As of October 15, 2025, consular services available for U.S. citizens in Iran are adjusted. Routine consular services, including acceptance of applications for full-validity passports and Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA) applications, and fee-based notarial services, are no longer available. This change reinforces the travel advice to U.S. citizens: Do Not Travel to Iran.
The Foreign Interests Section will continue to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens, including acceptance of emergency passport applications, Consular Report of Death Abroad (CRDA) applications, emergency financial assistance, assistance to detained U.S. nationals, and welfare and whereabouts checks for U.S. citizens when security conditions permit.
Distribution of retirement and Social Security benefits, as well as Service of Process upon the Government of Iran, will continue for the time being. For routine consular services, U.S. citizens should visit the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate or return to the United States.
