Education levels

Primary Level

Primary schoolchildren acquire and develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to further their education.

Secondary Level

The secondary education system is divided into two levels. Lower secondary is the final stage of compulsory education, but more than 90% of pupils continue on to upper-secondary level.

Higher Education

At the tertiary level the Swiss education system offers an extensive and diverse range of programmes which can be taken at a cantonal university, one of the two federal institutes of technology, a university of applied sciences or a university for teacher education.

Several international higher education rankings rate certain Swiss universities among the best in the world.

Professional Education and Training

Professional education and training (PET) encompasses PET college programmes, federal PET diploma examinations and advanced federal PET diploma examinations.
