The secondary education system is divided into two levels. Lower secondary is the final stage of compulsory education, but more than 90% of pupils continue on to upper-secondary level.
At the tertiary level the Swiss education system offers an extensive and diverse range of programmes which can be taken at a cantonal university, one of the two federal institutes of technology, a university of applied sciences or a university for teacher education.
Professional education and training (PET) encompasses PET college programmes, federal PET diploma examinations and advanced federal PET diploma examinations.
