Jacques Ducrest studied law at the universities of Neuchâtel and Mannheim before going on to gain a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from McGill University in Montreal. He has also been admitted to the bar of the canton of Neuchâtel. Having joined the federal government's diplomatic service in 1998, he completed postings to Manila, Prague and Vienna before joining the Directorate of Public International Law DPIL, and then the Sectoral Foreign Policies Division SFPD, at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA. The SFPD is a division within the Directorate of Political Affairs which ensures coherence between thematic policy areas and Switzerland's foreign policy. It ensures efficient cooperation and coordination between the FDFA and relevant offices in other departments. This coordination work focuses primarily on the areas of economics and finance, sustainability, energy, the environment and health, as well as education, science, transport and spatial planning matters.

Jacques Ducrest has been Deputy Head of the Sectoral Foreign Policies Division since 1 September 2017 and oversees a cross-disciplinary approach to current challenges.  In this capacity, on 22 March 2019 he was appointed Delegate of the Federal Council for the 2030 Agenda.
