In Afghanistan’s south-east, communities take charge of their development. They identify their priorities in a series of open discussions, jointly with district and provincial authorities. Then they contribute land, labour or materials to the realization of their goals with support by SDC. Eventually, they themselves maintain irrigation structures, orchards, drinking water systems and reforestation plots.
“My ultimate goal is to develop our society by empowering people through a better education. Therefore, I wish to become a teacher in the future”, says Amina, a 9th grade student from Shidoj Girls’ High School in Shughnan district of Badakhshan province.
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is collaborating with the Swiss NGO, Terre des hommes (Tdh), to build a more sustainable future in Rustaq and improve the living conditions of its rural people.
For 24-year-old Abdul Manan, the reason for working on the road construction in his village is not only an attractive daily wage but taking part in the reconstruction of his country.
