As the official representation of Switzerland, the embassy covers all matters concerning diplomatic relations between the two countries. It represents Swiss interests in the areas of political, economic and financial affairs, legal arrangements, science, education and culture. In addition, the embassy is responsible for development cooperation between Switzerland and North Macedonia.
The tasks of the embassy
The embassy supports cooperation between Switzerland and North Macedonia and promotes the Swiss economy. It establishes contacts with Swiss businesses and provides them with general information and legal advice concerning the economy of North Macedonia. The embassy monitors the economic and political situation in North Macedonia and communicates developments that are of interest for Switzerland.
Switzerland has been supporting North Macedonia in its transition towards a pluralistic democracy and a fully functioning economy since 1992. The Swiss development programmes contributed not only to the transition process, but also established strong links of cooperation between Swiss and the institutions in North Macedonia, enterprises, and civil society organizations. After its merging with the Swiss Cooperation Office in 2014, development cooperation is the core area of activity within the embassy. This includes planning and coordination of the implementation of the Swiss Cooperation Programme North Macedonia 2021–24. A dedicated team coordinates the support Switzerland provides in the areas of democratic governance, employment and economic development, as well as infrastructure and environment, provided through the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
