Existing infrastructure and service provision are not able to cope with the increased water demand.

High water losses resulting from deteriorated water networks and inefficient administrative processes, reduce to a great extent the revenues of the water companies, which leads to poor maintenance of the infrastructure and hence to a poor service provision.

The state policies and strategies for a coherent development of the water sector need to improve, in order to enhance the water resource management and to ensure a quality, reliable and affordable water and wastewater service provision.

Principaux résultats attendus:  

Under outcome 1:

Output 1     AWSC business processes are analyzed and modeled for improvement towards more effective, efficient and reliable service provision

Output 2     AWSC cost side is analyzed and optimized with a focus on leak detection and energy saving measures

Output 3     AWSC revenue side is analyzed and optimized with the aid of an improved customer data base

Output 4     Lessons learnt, best practices and recommendations from Phase 1 are integrated into policy dialogue on sector reform at national level

Under Outcome 2:

Output 5     Water distribution network extended and rehabilitated in Khor Awada, Kattereya, Amberkab and El-Nasiriya (continuation in the remaining part)

Output 6     Water supply system enhanced to provide enough water with a sufficient pressure in Khor Awada, Kattereya and Amberkab (water storage and pumping capacity provided, transmission pipelines built)

Under outcome 3:

Output 7     Awareness outreach activities on hygiene, water and environmental issues in schools conducted 

Output 8     Public awareness campaigns with a focus on adopting efficient water use strategies conducted in cooperation with AWSC

Output 9     Community awareness activities and initiatives implemented by local CDAs and the awareness & community teams of AWSC

Output 10   Communication channels among community leaders, project team and AWSC representatives are established as well as Project implementation involved the residents of the targeted settlement areas in a participatory way

No previous phase has been carried out, however, a single phase project "Access to Quality Drinking Water and More Efficient Water Usage" was implemented between 2012 – 2016 with following key results:

Modernisation and extension of water supply and distribution system within informal settlement area of El-Nasiriya (serving 100'000 inhabitants)

New operational and management tools were tested at the AWSC

Adoption of different water rationalisation measures by the inhabitants of El-Nasiriya
