The project aims at social prevention of crime and violence by promoting better job and life perspectives for youth living in marginal urban areas in conditions with high exposure to crime and violence and at the same time with limited access to education, professional training and jobs. Improved quality and expanded coverage of professional training is expected to improve employment perspectives of young men and woman at risk of social exclusion.

Background

Citizen insecurity is the main development obstacle. High victimization rates, particularly in marginal urban areas. Poor job and income perspectives of youth. Limited professional training offer.

Objectives

Facilitate the insertion into the labor market and self-employment and generate income opportunities for young men and women at risk of social exclusion

Target groups

Young men and women, living in marginal, violent urban areas, with limited access to professional training, poor job perspectives and thus at risk of social exclusion or criminal behaviour.

Medium-term outcomes

Improved quality and expanded coverage of the “Talleres Populares” professional training system. 10’700 youth trained, 50% employed within 12 month after completion. Professional training offer in occupations suitable for youth at risk in two dynamic economic sectors developed. 1500 youth trained, 50% employed within 6 months post completion.

Results

Results from previous phases:  

Relevance of Talleres Populare approach, targeting youth at risk confirmed. Limited impact (jobs, income). Need to improve quality, labor-market orientation of trainings.
