Switzerland supports construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Kocani

With Swiss support, approximately 150,000 persons have benefitted from improved water resource management. This number will be further increased, when the wastewater treatment plant in Kocani is constructed and starts to operate.

By laying a cornerstone, the construction works of the wastewater treatment plant in Kocani was symbolically marked at a ceremony held on 10th July. High officials including the Ambassador of Switzerland, Sybille Suter, the Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Sadula Duraku, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Jani Makraduli, the Mayor of Kocani, Ratko Dimitrovski, as well as other guests and media, were present at the event.

The wastewater treatment plant will enable treatment of the wastewater from households and light industry from the city of Kocani, other close villages, and from the city of Vinica in future. In this way, the pollution of the River Bregalnica from the wastewater will be eliminated and the water from the river can be used for drinking, irrigation, and it will contribute to maintaining the ecosystem in the river. The capacity of the plant is 65,000 population equivalents, and its construction will be completed in three years. The total budget of the project is CHF 23 million, out of which CHF 2 million are provided through national contribution, and CHF 21 million are a grant from the Swiss Secretariat for Economic Affairs, represeting the biggest Swiss donation to Macedonia until now.
