Professional education and training to enhance employability of young people in Nicaragua

Projekt abgeschlossen

Nicaragua’s need for significant improvements at all levels of education is widely recognized. The recent Vocational Education and Training (VET) system reform and SDC’s good results in the cooperation with the National Technological Institute (INATEC) provide a good base for a new project phase. The overall goal of the project is to reduce poverty and vulnerability among youth. The employability and inclusion of young men and women from rural areas and marginal urban settings into the labour market will be enhanced.

Hintergrund

  • In Nicaragua, every year at least 80’000 new jobs need to be created just to maintain current employment levels.
  • For youth from rural or marginal urban areas, it is very hard to access the labor market. Inadequate VET services represent important hurdles.
  • Economic dynamics urgently require a better-qualified labor force.
  • Ziele

SDC contributes to the reduction of poverty and vulnerability among Nicaraguan youth through the increase in employability and inclusion into the labor market of young men and women from rural and marginal urban settings who are at risk of social exclusion.

    Zielgruppen
    • Nicaraguan youth at risk of social exclusion.
    • Trainers of the vocational education and training system, including public and private providers.

    Mittelfristige Wirkungen

    i) The relevance and quality of INATEC’s services have improved and the access to these services has increased, especially for youth at risk of social exclusion in rural and marginal urban areas. ii) Best training practices for youth at risk of social exclusion are identified, strengthened and disseminated (scaling-up). iii) 10’000 women and men will be trained; 60 % of the trainees will earn more than the minimum wage.

    Resultate

    Resultate von früheren Phasen:

Results: Work within INATEC increased opportunities to contribute to the sector reform and impact at the national level. Norms for skills recognition have been developed; curriculum design for the training of trainers established; 300 trainers and 6000 women and men trained. Insights: A stronger market orientation of VET services is required. In particular, the training needs of dynamic sectors of the economy and of specific value chains shall be taken into account.
