The Directorate for European Affairs (DEA) is the centre of expertise for Switzerland's European policy.
It reports to the Head of the DFA and performs the following tasks:
- Monitoring the developments in Europe and analysing and assessing their likely consequences for Switzerland
- Co-ordination of matters concerning integration law and policy and negotiation of treaties with the EU in close collaboration and co-responsibility with the departments competent for the respective matters
- Information on Switzerland's European policy and European integration
- Definition and implementation of the foreign policy guidelines in the relations with the neighbouring countries and the other Western and Central European countries (EU member states, partner states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) as well as Andorra, the Holy See, Monaco and San Marino), in cooperation with the Swiss embassies concerned.
