For decades, Switzerland's electricity market and infrastructure have been closely interlinked with those of its neighbouring countries. This integration into the European electricity market is in Switzerland's interest, as it helps to achieve national energy policy objectives and ensures a reliable supply of electricity.
With the planned electricity agreement, Switzerland and the European Union (EU) intend to establish a legal framework for Switzerland's participation in the European electricity market, thereby further developing cross-border electricity trading. This will enable Switzerland to secure its role as a European electricity hub and to open up new opportunities for its flexible hydropower.
